{"id":3234,"date":"2011-10-19T14:14:00","date_gmt":"2011-10-19T22:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fitchicks.ca\/blog\/?p=3234"},"modified":"2011-10-19T14:14:00","modified_gmt":"2011-10-19T22:14:00","slug":"wellness-wednesday-dont-eat-the-shiny-meat-its-time-to-be-accountable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.fitchicks.ca\/blog\/2011\/10\/wellness-wednesday-dont-eat-the-shiny-meat-its-time-to-be-accountable\/","title":{"rendered":"Wellness Wednesday &#8211; &#8220;Don&#8217;t eat the shiny meat!&#8221;&#8230;it&#8217;s time to be accountable!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hey Chicks,<\/p>\n<p>Happy Wednesday &#8211; it is half way through the week, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitchicks.ca\">week 3 of our October Bootcamps <\/a>and a yucky rainy day in Toronto!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So I worked quite late last night, got a haircut that I am not loving (my top layers are way too short!) and then went home to zone out and watch one of my favorite <del>guilty pleasures <\/del>shows right now &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thexfactorusa.com\/\">the XFactor<\/a> (I actually have a now not so secret crush on Simon Cowell and am totally rooting for little Rachel!).\u00a0 After that I was chatting on the phone with a friend about\u00a0deli meat\u00a0(sounds weird I know, but read on to see why as it is\u00a0something I am VERY passionate about.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>This was our convo:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Me &#8220;Deli\u00a0meat\u00a0should be illegal&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Him:\u00a0 &#8220;People can choose to eat it or not&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Me: &#8220;True, but it is so toxic they should not even be allowed on grocery shelves.\u00a0 I know we have a choice of what we put in our mouths but then why shouldn&#8217;t heroin be on the grocery shelves.\u00a0 We know that\u00a0it is bad for us so why can&#8217;t we have that as a accessible choice as well&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Him: &#8220;It is just how it is.\u00a0Do you really think you can change that?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Me: &#8220;Yes I do<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitchicks.ca\/about\/meet-your-chick-sergeants\">Amanda<\/a> and I started <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitchicks.ca\">FIT CHICKS<\/a>, one of the ideas we built it on was accountability.\u00a0<strong> We wanted to inspire chicks to be accountable and involved in their health.<\/strong>\u00a0 But I get so frustrated when I watch my chicks every week, sweating their butts off, working so hard to make positive changes in their bodies, be good examples for their families and friends and are being fed\u00a0false information!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0They go home and are inundated with messages from food companies advertising products that\u00a0are\u00a0what the food administration say are &#8220;approved healthy choices&#8221; (like\u00a0that deli meats are a low fat healthy option &#8211; seriously?!) \u00a0for chicks and their families.\u00a0 They believe they are making great food choices becasue we have grown to trust these companies. But unfortunately they are not.\u00a0 How can you be accountable when you are being lied to by\u00a0corporations and the companies that are supposed to make sure this does not happen! (sorry, I am getting upset&#8230;don&#8217;t mess with my chicks!)<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s use yogurt as an example.\u00a0 Everyone thinks that yogurt is a health food (and it can be) but the lovely people over at companies like <strong>Yoplait can put up to 24 grams of sugar (that is 6 teaspoons!) to a little\u00a0serving of yogurt!<\/strong>\u00a0 6 teaspoons (think about what 6 teaspoons would taste like in your tea..yuck!)\u00a0 The low fat types can have even more.\u00a0 And you definately want to stay away from the ones with artificiall sweetners like aspartame! These food are given the healthy check symbols so we think that they are a good choice &#8211; but wrong.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/whatscookingwithkids.com\/2011\/04\/06\/look-theres-yogurt-in-my-sugar\/\">Check out this great sugar comparison post from whatscookingwithkids.com <\/a>&#8211; awesome visuals to see how much sugar it equates too!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moral of the story &#8211; it&#8217;s time to be accountable!\u00a0<\/strong> While we all keep trying to make the food corporations accountable, start by making yourself accountable for your food choices! Pick local, organic when possible.
