Back to reality today \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to talk to you all about snacking.<br \/>\nSnacks are fabulous&#8230;.but&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>You have to change the way you define the word snack. It should be thought of as a small meal. When you think snack you think mostly processed, high carb\/high fat treats. In fact, the question I hear the most is &#8220;what do you feed your kids for snacks?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I try to make sure that &#8220;snacks&#8221; are just small meals made up of protein, fruits, veggies, healthy fats and sometimes whole grains. \u00a0And they have to be easy things to throw together &#8211; I can&#8217;t be bothered to make big batches of muffins and the like (plus, I would eat them all!)<\/p>\n<p>To give you some ideas, here of my some of mine (and my kids) faves:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>plain greek yogurt with blueberries and a spoon of nut butter<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitchicks.ca\/blog\/2011\/06\/mama-chick-monday-healthy-hot-breakfast-cereal\/\">oatmeal<\/a> (it doesn&#8217;t always have to be for brekkie!)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitchicks.ca\/blog\/2011\/06\/mama-chick-mondays-healthy-popsicle-recipe\/\">healthy popsicles<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitchicks.ca\/blog\/2010\/08\/its-easy-being-green\/\">green smoothies<\/a><\/li>\n<li>veggies with hummus or guacomole<\/li>\n<li>hard boiled eggs served with fruit or veggies<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitchicks.ca\/blog\/2011\/06\/wellness-wednesday-high-protein-high-fibre-pancake-recipe\/\">protein pancakes <\/a>(these are even yummy eaten cold, so you can pack them up to go!)<\/li>\n<li>fruit with some nut butter (fruit alone isn&#8217;t a great snack, it&#8217;s very high in simple sugars and won&#8217;t stave off hunger for long!)<\/li>\n<li>string cheese with some grape tomatoes<\/li>\n<li>scrambled eggs topped with berries<\/li>\n<li>1 piece of ezekiel bread made into french toast, topped with coconut butter and a few berries<\/li>\n<li>plain yogurt mixed with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitchicks.ca\/blog\/2011\/05\/mama-chick-mondays-\u2013-healthy-eating-and-exercise-advice-for-moms\/\">pumpkin<\/a>, cinnamon, cocoa and a few walnuts<\/li>\n<li>tuna mixed with broccoli slaw, sesame oil and sprinkled with sesame seeds<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.damyhealth.com\/2010\/08\/salt-and-vinegar-kale-chips-2\/\">kale chips<\/a> &#8211; there are a ton of recipes for these floating around, here is one of my faves!<\/li>\n<li>larabars &#8211; they are great in an emergency (pick em up cheap at Costco!)<\/li>\n<li>leftovers &#8211; always a fab snack!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And I have more ideas too &#8211; but the list was getting too long! And notice there were no 100 calorie snack packs on there!
