{"id":2435,"date":"2011-05-17T18:36:04","date_gmt":"2011-05-18T02:36:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fitchicks.ca\/blog\/?p=2435"},"modified":"2011-05-17T18:36:04","modified_gmt":"2011-05-18T02:36:04","slug":"top-5-gluten-free-low-carb-substitutes-for-bread","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.fitchicks.ca\/blog\/2011\/05\/top-5-gluten-free-low-carb-substitutes-for-bread\/","title":{"rendered":"Top 5: Gluten Free, Low-Carb Substitutes for Bread"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hey Chicks,<\/p>\n<p>Happy Wednesday!<\/p>\n<p>Today I wanted to post about a question I actually got from one of my chicks in my <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitchicks.ca\/locations\/toronto\">Toronto Danforth boot camp<\/a><\/strong> class last night. She told me she is\u00a0trying to cut back on processed carbs and asked me a question I get alot, &#8220;What can I eat instead of bread?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I try to avoid bread and processed carbohydrates.\u00a0 Even\u00a0though whole\u00a0grain bread is the better choice over white bread, it is still a processed food and everyone has\u00a0a different tolerance to how\u00a0many carbohydrates and how their body processes it.\u00a0 Bread causes me to feel puffy, sluggish and &#8220;backed up&#8221;\u00a0which is probably due to my <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gluten\">tolerance to gluten<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gluten\"> <\/a>(my naturopath\u00a0had advised me against eating gluten awhile ago)<\/p>\n<p>That is not to say I\u00a0don&#8217;t ever eat it but I\u00a0try to really limit my consumption.\u00a0 Bread is more just\u00a0the &#8220;vehicle&#8221; to transport all the yummy fillings\u00a0and there are so many other awesome, healthy, natural options out there that you can still stuff with your favorite healthy proteins and vegetables.\u00a0\u00a0Here are some of my favorites:<\/p>\n<h2>TOP 5 : Gluten Free and Low-Carb Options instead of bread.<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Portobello Mushrooms<\/strong> &#8211; fill them with ground meat, veggies, or use as a burger bun.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lettuce Wraps<\/strong> &#8211; stuff with your fave sandwich filling, roll and eat. Delish!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cabbage Wraps<\/strong> &#8211; this is one of my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitchicks.ca\/blog\/2011\/05\/introducing-mama-chick-mondays-healthy-eating-and-exercise-advice-for-moms\/\">Sis&#8217; faves for my nieces<\/a>. It holds better than lettuce and has a super crunch texture. Try green, purple, napa or chinese &#8211; yummy!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flax Seed Crust<\/strong> &#8211; Instead of pizza crust, try a flax seed crust. Full of healthy fats and fibre, it&#8217;s a great alternative to bread.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cauliflower Rice<\/strong> &#8211; While not a substitute for bread, it&#8217;s a great alternative to white rice or grains. Use a food processor with the grating blade to grate it into little shards of &#8220;rice&#8221;. Sautee in some coconut oil (it stands the high heat much better than olive oil) and use as you would rice.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div id=\"attachment_2460\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitchicks.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/caulirice.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2460\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2460\" title=\"caulirice\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fitchicks.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/caulirice-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"cauliflower rice, low carb substitution, gluten free \" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.fitchicks.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/caulirice-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.fitchicks.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/caulirice-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2460\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cauliflower rice - looks just like real rice, and tastes awesome!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It may seem weird at first, but try it for a week switching out all of your bread for these low carb alternatives and see how you feel.
